As of the census of 2010, there were 6,738 people, 2,706 households, and 1,749 families residing in the township. There were 2,898 housing units. The racial makeup of the township was 96.6% White, 1.4% African American, 0.5% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.8% of the population.
There were 2,706 households out of which 25.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.3% were married couples living together, 10.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.4% were non-families. 30.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.28 and the average family size was 2.82.
In the township, the population was spread out with 20% under the age of 19, 4.9% from 19 to 24, 20.3% from 25 to 44, 30.4% from 45 to 64, and 24.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 48 years.
