Your Local Resource for Conservation Services

The Blair County Conservation District is a local agency providing conservation-based programs and services to the residents of Blair County.  The District acts as a clearinghouse for natural resource information and promotes local environmental initiatives.  We often serve as the first contact for environmental issues related to the identification, protection, and preservation of natural resources in Blair County.

An active, knowledgeable board of district directors and a professional, well-trained staff are the foundation for the success of the Blair County Conservation District.  The Board of Directors are residents of the county, nominated for service by local organizations and appointed by the Blair County Commissioners.  They act to solicit resources and projects for the betterment of our area.  Who better knows the needs and issues of the county than those who live and work here?

Whether you are in engaged in Agriculture, Erosion and Sediment Control, Stormwater, Watershed Management, Conservation Education or have interest in Riparian Buffers or the Dirt, Gravel and Low Volume Roads, chances are the District has resources and information for your use.  We encourage you to peruse this website and offer that you contact us if you would like more information about any of our programs.

Programs We Provide

Agriculture

Agriculture

The Blair County Conservation District has its roots in Agriculture.  The District was formed by a local group of farmers seeking technical services and information related to a County Soil Survey.  The Conservation District has remained loyal to Blair County’s Number one Industry – AGRICULTURE!

Erosion & Sediment

Erosion & Sediment

The Blair County Conservation District is delegated by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to administer the Title 25, Chapter 102, Erosion and Sediment Pollution Control (E&S), and Chapter 92, National Pollutant Discharge Elimination Systems (NPDES) programs.

Watershed

Watershed

A watershed, also known as a drainage basin, is an area of land in which all water that falls on the land drains into a common waterway, such as a stream or river.  The topography of the landscape determines watershed boundaries because all water naturally flows downhill.

Stormwater

Stormwater

To control runoff and protect property in developed areas, stormwater management systems are used to collect stormwater runoff, infiltrate back to the ground water or carry it to storage areas and to an eventual discharge point. Post Construction Stormwater Management considerations are a requirement for projects.

Conservation Education

Conservation Education

We offer a variety of educational programs for all ages. We welcome you and your family to attend any or all of our educational programs across the County or at NatureWorksPark. Schools, libraries, and/or community groups are invited to contact us about scheduling educational programs. We would be happy to visit your school or organization or be your host at NatureWorksPark!

Riparian Buffers

Riparian Buffers

A riparian buffer reduces water pollution by intercepting and filtering runoff from adjacent urban, industrial, or agricultural land, it slows stream water velocities to reduce flood events. The vegetation roots of a buffer protects vulnerable soils along the stream bank and prevents erosion.

Recreation

Recreation

Visit NatureWorksPark, Blair County’s first environmental specific outdoor education and recreation area! This greenspace is your very own place to connect with and learn more about your local environment. If you are interested in guided tours or our educational programs at NatureWorksPark, contact our Conservation Education Specialist, J.T. Bandzuh.

Dirt & Gravel Roads

Dirt & Gravel Roads

The District is pleased to offer funding to municipalities for projects related to the Environmentally Sensitive Maintenance of Dirt, Gravel, and Low Volume Roads.  Annually the Blair County Conservation District will receive funds to distribute locally based on applications received.
